The sound of knocking on my door startles me out of a nap. Henry’s arms are wrapped around me, and his leg his hooked over mine. We must have drifted off. “Oh no!” I shriek as I jump out of bed and start searching for my clothes.

Henry stretches and rolls over. “I could stare at you forever,” he says calmly, as though he doesn’t notice my panic.

“Not now, Henry! We have to get dressed. J.C. is at the door. I completely forgot that I told him we’d have pizza together.”

“Aw, baby. Why would you do something like that?”

“Shh, Henry, he’s right outside the door. Don’t be a jerk. J.C. is a nice guy and he was lonely. His VCR broke.”

“He has a VCR?” Henry laughs. “You must be kidding me.”

“Quiet, or he’ll hear you. That VCR meant a lot to him.”

J.C. knocks again.

“One sec,” I call out. I grab some sweats from the plethora in my closet and throw them on. I run my fingers through my hair and Henry grabs his clothes and rushes into the bathroom to get dressed.

I pull the door open and the only thing I can say is “Oh my god.” J.C. looks like a different person. In fact, he’s startlingly handsome. His obviously washed hair is still damp. He’s wearing faded jeans, brown Blundstone boots, and a navy hoodie zipped all the way up. His eyes are the color of coffee with a splash of milk. “You look great, J.C.,” I say. And I really mean it. I can’t believe this is the same guy who sat here in his ratty boxers a short while ago. I invite him in. “Henry’s here,” I say, expecting J.C. to flinch, but it doesn’t faze him.

“Awesome,” J.C. says. “He’s a cool dude.”

Just then Henry pops out of the bathroom. He puts his hand out to shake with J.C. “What’s up buddy?” he asks.

“I had a wicked bad day. Syd offered to have pizza with me.”

“Crap! I didn’t order the pizza yet,” I say. “I’m so out of it. Who delivers the fastest?”

“That’d be Turtle Pizza,” J.C. says.

“I love Turtle’s,” Henry says. “Deep crust? Extra cheese?”

Everyone agrees and I place the order along with a request for three orders of their special dessert, pecan turtle brownies.

I fold up my futon so Henry and J.C. can sit on it like a sofa. I sit on the floor across from them leaning against the wall. Tiny and Little run over to me, climbing all over each other as they snuggle into my lap. I pet them and their absurdly loud purring breaks the award silence in the room.

“You mind if I smoke in here?” J.C. asks as he pulls a joint out of his pocket.

“Not if you’re sharing,” Henry answers.

Apparently these two have forgotten that we’re in my apartment. “Excuse me!” I snap as J.C. lights up.

“Oh, Syd, don’t worry. I’ll share with you, too,” J.C. says, and sucks on the joint he’s holding between his forefinger and his thumb.

“This is a nonsmoking apartment!” I reply, but the guys are ignoring me.
